Rear Extension // Highbury

Rear & Side Return Extension

Highbury, Islington

This terraced four-bedroom house, in Highbury, had an ageing existing side return extension housing a dining area. This space was poorly connected to the rest of the kitchen, which was also in need of updating. The clients wanted to reconfigure the kitchen and dining room to create a more open plan layout, with better links out to the garden.

Studio Wolsey proposed to renew the existing side return and construct a new rear extension, to open-up the back of the house and create a new, light-filled, kitchen / dining area. Skylights to the roof of the new side return will allow light to flood in, while reducing overlooking from neighbours. A new set of French doors will provide views and access out to the garden, while a large picture window with window seat will create a cosy reading nook.

The rear extension will be constructed from London stock brick to match the existing house, with a band of dark brickwork to the base, to anchor the extension.
