Should I use an Architect?

When it comes to engaging someone to help you design your project, it can be hard to know who to hire. There are lots of options; from using an Architect or architectural designer, to loft specialists or builders. So how do you know if using an Architect is the right choice for you?

Well let’s start with what an Architect actually does.

What does an Architect do?

An Architect is a highly trained professional who will help to turn your design dreams into reality. They will guide you through the whole process from initial ideas, through design, planning and construction.

Architects are creative problem solvers, who can find hidden opportunities and maximise the potential of your home or site. Whether adding space or light, a better flow through your home or making the most of your investment, Architects add value to your project – even Kevin says so…

‘A good architect actually pays for themselves - more than once. You will reap the reward and the building will be hugely better and deliver much better value for it.’
— Kevin McCloud, Grand Designs

An Architect’s Training

Architectural training takes a long time – a minimum of 7 years.

In the UK, this generally comprises of:

  • 3-year Undergraduate Degree: RIBA Part 1

  •  Minimum of 1-year work experience in an architectural practice

  •  2-year Postgraduate Master’s Degree / Diploma: RIBA Part 2

  •  1-year Professional Experience Degree – including legal exams: RIBA Part 3

Once you have obtained RIBA Part 1, 2 and 3, you can apply to join the Architectural Registration Board’s Architect Register, and legally call yourself an Architect.

Note: The title ‘Architect’ is legally protected, so only people who have completed their full training and qualified are allowed to use it. Companies or individuals who call themselves ‘architectural designers’ or similar are generally not eligible.

All Architect’s must be registered with the ARB. If an individual is not registered, they may be operating unregulated and there are no guarantees of their ability to deliver the service you require. Link.

How is that different to other designers?

  • Architects have undergone high levels of training – a minimum of 7 years.

  • They have a holistic approach encompassing; your needs, space and scale, construction, regulations and relationships with consultants, suppliers and contractors.

  • Architects are good at seeing opportunities in complex problems.

  • They make the client central to the process and fully involved with design decisions – they work together to develop the best solution.

  • A solution which is a unique and creative response.

  • They develop designs to a high level of detail, which leads to a better quality built result.

  • Architects make the experience enjoyable and minimise the stress.

  • Architects act with honesty and integrity. They are regulated by the ARB and RIBA and must abide by their Codes of Conduct.

  • Things always go wrong when it comes to construction projects, but an Architect will always be on hand to resolve any issues as quickly and smoothly as possible.

So, should I use an Architect?

  • Is design and the experience of your space important to you?

  • Do you want to be involved in the process?

  • Do you want something unique?

  • Do you have a complex or unusual brief or site?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any or all of the above, then you should definitely consider using an Architect. You can always call or email us for a no obligation chat about your project.
